History of Dr Rudi’s

Welcome to Dr Rudi’s Bar, located on the second level of Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour.

Our rooftop spot offers one of the most spectacular views in the world for brewing, drinking, eating and socializing. Whether you’re in the mood for a cold beer on a hot day, or a warm meal on a chilly evening, our team is dedicated to making your experience at Dr Rudi’s an unforgettable one.

Dr. Rudi’s combines a great view of the city and the craftsmanship of brewers in one place. Here you can sample a variety of craft beers and enjoy socializing in a cozy and friendly atmosphere.

Not only do we have the best seat in Auckland for sipping back, relaxing and watching the viaduct float by, we also serve up mouthwatering good three-foot pizzas, and have our own bowling lanes.

Our name honours Dutch-born plant scientist Dr. Rudi Roborgh who spent more than 20 years working with hops. He is largely considered the father of New Zealand’s hop cultivation and has been called The Godfather of New Zealand Hops, and the namesake of a well-known locally-made beer.

In the 1950s the survival of New Zealand’s booming hop industry hung in the balance with the widespread presence of a deadly soil disease named Black Root Rot.

Dr Roborgh set about trying to eradicate it and went on to develop many new varieties of hops that were resistant to the disease. One of the hops was called the “DrRudi Super Alpha” which was the world’s first seedless, commercial hop plant.

It (and the many other hops he developed) is still used (and are used) in beers all around the world to this day.

Dr Roborgh solved the disease problem in the early 1960s by releasing new resistant cultivars.

Dr Roborgh retired in 1973 having been responsible for the development of six new cultivars of hops which kicked off New Zealand’s journey towards hops that could grow in New Zealand’s environment and meet the needs of brewers.

Dr Rudi’s is proud of its history and excited for its future. We are located in the heart of the Viaduct Harbour, Auckland CBD, surrounded by amazing views, particularly of sunsets, the Harbour bridge and the surrounding Hauraki Gulf.

We are known for our amazing rooftop location, our “late night” vibe, a large range of beers and our bowling lanes.

Dr Rudi’s was once home to Kermadec Brasserie and was owned by Simonovich Fisheries and showcased their fresh catch. Kermadec opened in 1994 and was one of the original venues in the Viaduct.

Today Dr Rudi’s offers fresh, succulent seafood as well superb share platters, nibbles, the biggest pizzas around and so much more.

We strive to source quality ingredients which come together to make a memorable meal. Whether feeding one or 100 – we’ve got you covered!

Our magnificent rooftop is the place to enjoy a beautiful sunset with a glass of fresh beer in hand.

Come in soon and say hello.

If you request an outdoor seat when making your booking, we'll do our best to accommodate however can't guarantee it.
